Description
During the construction of the Ledo Road between 1942 and 1945, the U.S. Army Engineers cut a 1,079-mile supply highway from Ledo, India, through Japanese-occupied Burma to China. There were heavy monsoons and swamps that made heavy-machinery unusable. Asian elephants were used haul weapons and supplies, built bridges and clear paths.
